The Fetlar Wind Project

Fetlar Wind was set up by the community in Fetlar to take forward a modest renewables project for the island. It has four directors and a company secretary, of whom all but one are currently based in Fetlar. They bring a range of skills and experience to the project from both the private and third sectors. They are supported by the Fetlar Development Worker, who has assisted with project coordination.

Fetlar Wind Ltd is constituted as a Community Benefit Society (sometimes referred to as a BenCom).The societies rules can be downloaded from here.

This is a form of co-operative and as such is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

The board is elected by the members at the AGM with each shareholder having one vote regardless of the number of shares they hold. Any surplus generated will be donated to a local registered charity, Fetlar Developments Ltd, to advance various community projects.

The Original Directors

Paul Gill - Director ( has subsequently stood down as he moved away from Fetlar)

Paul is principal teacher at Fetlar school. He was previously a founding director and Chairman of Fetlar Developments Ltd. Currently he is a Trustee of Fetlar Museum Trust. He has over 7 years experience of setting up and running social enterprises.

Colin Thomason - Director & Company Secretary

Colin is currently employed as a Marine Engineer on the local ferry as well as running his own croft. He has significant previous experience in construction, engineering and plant operation. Colin is a current director of Fetlar Developments Ltd.

Nicolas Boxall - Director ( has subsequently stood down as he moved away from Fetlar)

Nic has run his own business on Fetlar for over 20 years which includes a post office, Shop, B&B and cafe. He also works part time for Scottish Water and as a retained firefighter. Nic was until recently - director and Chairman of Fetlar Developments Ltd. He now lives outside Fetlar but retains business interests here.

Bridgette Thomason - Company Secretary ( has subsequently stood down )

Bridgette is a self-employed book keeper, with over 10 years experience. She works for a number of local companies in both the Private and Social Enterprise sectors.

Nils Smith - Director

Nils trained as a marine engineer and spent 15 years in the Shetland fishing fleet before pursuing a career in Aquaculture. He is based at a hatchery and is involved in all aspects of Salmon husbandry. He has been a director of Fetlar Developments since its formation.

John has extensive previous experiece as a Company Director in the commercial sector.

Sharenergy

Sharenergy is a not-for-profit organisation which helps communities find, build and own renewable energy generation: they are currently working with hydro power, wind, biomass, biogas and solar projects throughout the UK. Sharenergy is a Registered Society (Co-operative) and was established in April 2011.

Sharenergy was established to help renewable energy Societies get up and running and provides a wide range of services to this end. We always work closely with community groups and aim to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and capabilities.
